Meet the tutor

Andrew Lawrenson

A very thorough, engaging and practical tutor. He covered a wide range of aspects of piping with me, helping to develop both my technique and repertoire, and his experience was especially valuable in helping me to prepare for competitions. Andy was very flexible in allowing me to nominate areas I wanted to work on, and his lessons were very enjoyable.

Andrew Lawrenson is a seasoned player, performer and teacher of the small pipes. Born in Scotland, but with strong ties to the North East, he has spent years learning and practising the close-fingered style associated with the most famous traditional players. A PGCE qualified teacher, he has helped people of all ages and abilities to begin or improve their playing. He currently works with High School pupils in teaching and ensures that sets of pipes are available for learning purposes.

Andrew is a member of the committee of the Northumbrian Pipers' Society. In recent years he has turned to reed-making and maintenance of the pipes in the belief that keeping your set at peak performance is half the battle of creating a good sound.
