Alistair Anderson has been performing in the traditional music field for over 5 decades. Having been inspired by a previous generation of Northumbrian musicians, including Billy Pigg, Will Atkinson and Willie Taylor, who wrote new tunes as well as playing older melodies, Alistair soon started writing tunes. He is now renowned as a composer of new music rooted in the tradition and has gone on to compose for The Lindsay String Quartet, The Singapore Chinese Orchestra, a mixed Northumbrian and Moravian group, contemporary dance companies, Northern Stage, a jazz/folk ensemble and numerous traditional music line ups.
Alistair’s groundbreaking composition Steel Skies caused quite a stir back in the early 80s and continues to inspire musicians and composers today.
Alistair plays concertina and Northumbrian pipes but his tunes are usually playable on any melodic instrument. He particularly enjoys creating a couple of melodies that can weave together.
